Tech Valley Communications Deploys FirstLight, A New Fiber-Based Technology

Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) provides businesses with Gigabit speed and greater reliability for data and voice communications

ALBANY, NY -- Tech Valley Communications (TVC), the only locally owned, facilities-based Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) in the Tech Valley Region, today announced the deployment of a new, fiber-based technology that will fundamentally change the way Tech Valley companies can access advanced voice and data services. TVC's new technology platform they are branding as FIRSTLIGHT utilizes fiber optic technology to provide super-high-speed, reliable, cost-effective data and voice communication solutions. TVC's new deployment is based on state-of-the-art Gigabit Passive Optical Networking (GPON). Launch of Tech Valley Communications' FIRSTLIGHT network is the culmination of $5 million in private investment over the past several years.

"With the FIRSTLIGHT deployment, TVC has the network platform to support the next wave of economic growth within the Tech Valley Region of New York State, growth which we believe will be strongly tied to the availability of high-speed, reliable communications technology," said Kevin O'Connor, CEO, Tech Valley Communications. "This significant investment in rebuilding the communications infrastructure of the Tech Valley Region will bring this market up to par with other major cities well before it may otherwise have happened."

Benefits of the FIRSTLIGHT network include the following:
* Gigabit (approximately one billion bytes) capacity
* Fiber-enabled disaster recovery (business continuity)
* Cost-effective communications solutions
* Enhanced voice and data communications
* Broad range of product availability
* Unaffected by power outages
* Increased reliability and functionality over traditional copper
technology

Modern fiber solutions replace traditional phone lines and coaxial cable services. Neither of these conventional options can provide the dependability and speed of fiber optics. Fiber optic cables contain thin glass fibers, carry light rather than electrical energy, and can transfer large amounts of data on a single fiber. One hair-like fiber optic strand can support more than 40 large companies with Gigabit voice and data communication speeds. They are not susceptible to adverse weather conditions or to the static and background noise sometimes present on traditional phone lines and cable.

"The founding principles of this company were based on a need to elevate the Tech Valley Region to major league city status so that local businesses can compete on a global stage," said O.Connor. "This initiative means that technology companies can start up here or relocate here with confidence."

Customers will see a high level of service with FIRSTLIGHT, as with all TVC service offerings. FIRSTLIGHT allows TVC to monitor customer locations from the TVC headquarters in downtown Albany, allowing for immediate testing, diagnostics, and troubleshooting. TVC is able to determine quickly whether a problem exists within the network or at the customer's place of business and offer quick resolution. "Availability of this technology means that local businesses have another choice when evaluating their communications technology needs," said O'Connor. "FIRSTLIGHT provides the most advanced communications services anywhere that Capital Region businesses of all sizes will find cost-effective."
