Albany, NY-April 1, 2003 - Tech Valley Communications (TVC), the only locally owned, facilities-based telecommunications carrier in the Tech Valley region, was awarded today with the "Rising Star" award by TechConnex, a local organization representing the Capital Region's software and technology industries. The awards ceremony, which was attended by a capacity crowd at the Desmond Hotel & Conference Center, honors the achievements of local companies and individuals in the technology sector for the success they have experienced in growing their business in the Tech Valley region. The "Rising Star" award is given to specifically recognize a company for its outstanding growth and potential impact.
Since its modest beginnings as a sketch on a cocktail napkin, Tech Valley Communications has certainly come up in the world as a contender in the field of telecommunications. Despite the current economic climate and "shake out" in the telecommunications sector, TVC has been able to buck the industry trend and shepherd the business to its current successful level. According to CEO, Kevin O'Connor, the company has grown tremendously since it began selling services in May of 2000 and is already profitable. The company started out with four people and a little over $5 million from local angel investors in the community. Now there are approximately 50 employees on staff and annual sales total $10 million per year.
"We expect to do a lot better than that in 2003," said Kevin O'Connor. Adding, "We're looking to employ a lot of people and continue to be active in the community. We're intensely locally focused. We really believe in the technology boom that's hitting the area. We believe that our company will only be as successful at this region, and we're in it for the long haul."
